I also think you need to talk to the labor board.  But as sucky as your arrangments was with this company, it may have all been legal.  But I really think its worth checking out with the labor board.

The payroll deductions for gas and the truck rental may not be considered illegal (keep in mind truck drivers who make rent to own deals with their employer).  When you are an employee, and dont get reinmbursed for business expenses, the IRS allows you to take deductions on those expenses. Employees can take deduction for many things like mileage, uniforms, union dues, tools, etc.... 

But if any of these expenses caused you to earn less than the min wage, you definitly have case.
