IMO, this is a pretty big deal for the telcos. 1G is hardly something to laugh at. FTTC and then the ability to use existing copper drops and inside wiring, allows the telco to easily service the kind of wiring that already exists in 99% of their customer's homes. Im willing to bet this new technology will give the telcos the option to use existing twisted pair or coax wiring inside the prem. If Im a telco, Im thinking this is a big deal.
