Not speaking for the author, but I am willing to bet he is meaning the far fringe elements of the conservative Christians, the Ted Bundy type, which, over the past 5-6 years, has became the more main stream face of the stereotype, that you can't deny. I am sure there are moderate and tolerant Christians out there, but they tend to not be as loud as the extremist, so their views are silenced by the ones that are screaming.
That being said, I think you missed the point of the article, its not about hate, even though it could be twisted that direction, its about ignorance, and the disinformation that is fed to the more ignorant (not stupid, there is a difference between ignorance and stupidity) population that blindly follow what the fringe right wing of the party (yes, the tea party is a perfect example) tell them.
I do appreciate your tactful reply, much easier to have a discussion and see a different point of view when the other person is willing to talk, instead of slander.
