Again, one word: Greed.
You only think with dollars/cents, I think in productivity and the natural flow of life. Give to the bottom, they will help increase the top, the other way around, never works.
Think of it like a tree, the leaves at the top, fall down to the bottom, and provides nutrients for the roots, which enables the tree to grow more leaves. Shave a little off the top, to feed the bottom, and watch the top grow.
