Mainly what you need to look at is the alinging of the core after the burn, nevermind all the other stuff you see on the screen. It is usually fine, as you can attest to the light levels before and after. If you are splicing two different fibers together(as it sounds like in this case), when you otdr you will more than likely see a gain shooting in one direction and a loss shooting the other direction. Sometimes nothing at all, but if the gain and loss equal out, basically a good splice.
