I think alot of it boils down to the people bidding the work don't know anything about placing the work and there are alot more companies bidding these jobs now probly more than ever, at many of these companies the people that put the bid together and win the bid recieve a bonus when the job starts not a percentage of profit when its completed so the incentive is to get the job and then figure out how to not go broke which usually leads to the guys subing the work getting paid less and less so then the quality of work suffers and then down the "slipery slope we go".
Same reason companies like TWC and Comcast can pick a price for the units and tell you take it or leave it because there are so many contractors nowadays. Hopefully it reaches a breaking point and thins the herd a little bit and prices can go back up.
