Indentured servitude was slightly differant from slavery in the way it operated. Slavery was for life, and a slave was considered livestock with no rights. Indentured servitude was voluntary, for a finite period of time and could be shortened by buying out your contract. An indentured servant usually entered into a contract to pay off debt or to get passage to the colonies.
