There is another part to add to that. The only reason Japan didn't try to invade the mainland US in WWII was because they were afraid there would be a guy with a gun behind every tree.
We have many enemies in the middle east, not because we declared them the enemy but they declared us the enemy. They would love to see our citizens disarmed and would invade in boatloads. If you've ever seen any videos on the internet with these guys all armed with AK47s and probably not legally obtained you would have to be nuts to give up your own gun. And I've got news for you they"re already here waiting.
