info on labor laws

am a inhouse employee that has worked many, many free hours for a new company going through their growing pains. stuck it out through the slow times and now they pay hours for the things but didnt for the first 12 months. want to be paid for them back then to. do i need to talk to a lawyer and if so what kind. any info will be appreciated
