  The way most cable systems are set up it is very possible to accomplish this, and very hard to detect. I am just thinking one way this is being done is by changing some of the commands in the firmware of the modems, thus mimicking another good account modem. Since most systems are opened bridged, there would be no way for the cmts to differentiate packet headers. It could be detected, but once discovered would need field investigation to try and find where the traffic was coming from.

  The cable company would be embarresed to tell a customer that someone has breached their account. Everything they offer is going down the pipes, and I am sure there is plenty of software out there for a person to sniff out whatever is going into their house.
