I could see that possibility. However, I would imagine that the ghost modem and the original modem would have to be in the same node because of the provisioning requirements. I could be wrong because I don't know much about plants. I just know that when installing modems, they had to be provisioned to the specific node they were in.
In any case, stealing cable is pretty much ripping off some VERY RICH people. VERY RICH people with a whole team of lawyers on retainer that would be fine with making an example out of you. These VERY RICH people have pretty much made the criminal penalties for cable theft greater than the crime of murder. So my suggestion if you plan to steal cable, you should just rob someone and kill them and use the money gained from that to buy the big cable package. At least you'll get out of prison sooner that way.
