Watch your terminology guys, if he is an employee "terminate employment " and "payatub" would indicate you are an employee, and they can not charge you for anything it is in writing, and you sign it. If you are a 1099 contractor then you would not receive a paystub, you would receive an invoice, you would also not terminate employment, as you are not an employee. That being said, if you signed a contract, and there is nothing in the contract concerning retainer or chargebacks, then they can not take money from you, you would have to sign an amendment or new contract, if you refuse, then they just stop giving you work. Not a good situation, just be clear, are you an employee or contractor?
