Let me explain how I do it.
First our amp. are equipped with -20 dB directional test point.
We insert the sweep gear for a + 15 dBmV input, plus the 20 dB test point, so + 35 dBmv return sweep level.
Our headend return gear is set for 0 dBmv at the CMTS.
Most of the time we need to install a return pad for the right level and a return EQ.
The return EQ is for a flat input at the CMTS.
The return pad is for the right return operating level.
You should always install the return pad at the output of the return IC.
