proper set up for Return padding

Question: I work in a Charter system and I have come across different opinions on how to properly set up the return. I was taught when you use an internal Dc in a S.A. Gain maker you need to also compensate for that DC on the reverse as well. example dc-8 you put an 8 pad on the down leg aux reverse in slot and a 2 pad on the thru leg on the aux in slot. dc-12 you put a 12 pad on the down leg and a 1 pad  on the thru, and for a 2-way you put a 4 on both aux inputs. can anyone shed some light on this?
