I use wood alcohol to start my grille, it's cheap about $3.50 a gallon from home depot in the paint dept, zero oil smell or after taste, burns very hot
just don't throw any on the coals after they are ambers, like when the coals get low and you want to add more and squirt more charcoal lighter fluid and toss a match to it, that stuff will flare up and burn your eyebrows off in a second and you don't even see the flame.
