I have been back and forth from CATV to Dish to DirecTV then back to CATV.
As a contract employee driving a company trucks it is all about the same. Mastec pays the most in a company truck but going to 6 week holds or more on pay. You work your ass off and sacrafice your social life and home life to make a halfway decent wage then hit by back charges and a Matrix system that keeps you floating with your head just above water.
All in all the installation trade used to be fairly ok with you able to make a decent living.
Now with the way things are most companies are looking for ways for you to shoulder the load for thier operations.
10 people lined up to take your place when you have had enough of the BS. Then when they have had enough another 10 waiting.
If you have never done this type of work before I would suggest not getting into it at all. It's all about the same. If you figure the money you earn on a contract wage and the hours you put in for that money you might be better off taking a minimum wage job that does not put that great of a demand on you, your family not to mention the liability. 90 day service on service for most places. Go fix things up to 90 days out on your own time and your own dime. Even if the failure is refurbished equipment, an act of nature (lightning strikes) or a customer edging the garden and hitting your newly installed drop.
With the time you put in doing installs you could work two low wage jobs and make the same pay.
