Just for shits and giggles are the connectors in question manufactured by PPG? If so they use to have a tendency for the fingers inside them to open up if they were put on incorrectly. This might explain why the problem goes away when you hit it they close again.  They will open back up over time tho. PPC pins were also dark in color looked almost like someone heated them with a torch.

If your using PPC's once you slide the cable into the front half of the connector, (the one with the pin) and when the center conductor starts to seat in the fingers, you have to stop pushing the cable into the connector and let the back nut finish seating it. If you don't the fingers get spread apart too far and don't make good contact. I had to get use to doing this cause I was use to Gilbert and LRC's and you always pushed on the cable until everything was tight.
