You forgot spousal visa or gaijin torokusho-, worked off base for a few years before going the SOFA route, depending on where you live at most folks either love foriegners or hate us... did hatsuri, doro koji, doboku, and general kariwaku. knew alot of friends who did tekkin and tobishoku, not for the faint of heart. I do not know many people whom come here cold from the states and stay, know a few but know many many more that do their 2 year contract and never see them again. I forgot how many 5 man yen izakaya nights I have had. and thats drinking the cheap stuff.
