Start with basics, is this an install where you installed the modem ? or a service call where the modem was already in place. Are you actually connecting to their wireless or somebody else's unsecured network.
Some commercial accounts will use static IP and you will have to set your laptop that way to check connectivity. If the sub went from a T1 or DSL to cable you'll need to get inside the router to change that as well. I used to always call ahead and ask if there will be somebody on-hand that has access to their intranet equipment so that those changes could be made and down time would be cut as short as possible that way.
