Upstream optimization on a SA6940

Could some one point me the right way on optimizing the upstream link on a 6940

I only have one 6.4MHz wide QAM 64 carrier centered at 35 MHz.   My plant has no actives aside from node itself.   Node to term tap.
What level should I be hitting the transmitter with in order to optimize the upstream with the above mentioned upstream loading?   I belive the transmitter is a 2dBm standard gain TX.   Should I just use a 0 dB RF pad in the transmitter input, or should I derate the actual drive level hitting the laser because of the channel loading?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
