The OTDR would show the splice if it was SM/MM  I wonder if you are having issues with gettign your power source to lauch into the fiber.  Put a long jump in front of the fiber and see what happens.  You say it has SM connectors???   Take a clsoe look at the conenctors make sure they are clean dip them and air dry.
