Did you check to see if the laptop is getting an IP when the x box is hooked up?? and is the router set up to issue a range of ips and not just one? go to the laptop and open a command prompt window if the laptop is vista just go to start and type cmd and hit enter. then in the command prompt window type ipconfig and hit enter see if you get a proper ip, subnet and gateway if you do then the issue is most likely a band width issue there is just not enough speed for the both of them.
