The Monks did not have enough time to bury the dead..... So they piled up the bodys and let the Mother Nature and the Maggots take their 'Course'. This was due  to a plauge that literally killed the Majority of the Population of Europe..... I am glad you got to visit it in person Action! I have only seen it on websites and read about it in books.... All that was left of the remains were the Bones and they were used rather Cleverlyby the Priests or Monks. Brings new meaning to rolling them Bones....
