Re: New Jethro type question(s)

The concern for me is not wether the os can suport the drive, but if the motherboard bus system is able to handle all the upgrades that he would like to do. Speed pointed out if there is enough pci slots, and you never mention if your drives are ide or sata. Since his motherboard is six years old I would assume there is no SATA connection which is what he would need if he gets one 1TB hard drive.
If that is the case he would want to get a ide adapter or a pci/sata and then that would take a pci slot out of the picture for video, tuner or hdmi cards. As with memory, it is always nice to have more but if the motherboard and cpu he has can't fully utilize it then it is a waste of time to me. He could get a couple of hard drives and then master/slave them to get the capacity, but he would still need the os disc in order to manage them.

Throw in a new motherboard, $50-$200, you do want to uprade so a higher end would run about 100 to 200. Now the os, if I upgraded I would want the 64 bit instead of 32bit which splicer probably has, so he would have to uprade to either xp pro or home media edition, which is what I would want, after all it sounds as if he is doing it for etertainment purposes. Someone might have a copy of it around or he would have to go to windows for a legal upgrade. 7 pro=$150

Splicer, consider this like cars. Say you have a dodge neon. It is practical, it gets the job done, goes to point a from point b, has room for a few things but you would like more of it. So you get a luggage rack, a few engine upgrades, a big noisy muffler on like all the kids are doing, as well as a spoiler. Don't forget tires and sporty rims. After all that, the performance will be a little better, you can carry a few more bags around, but you still have a dodge neon in the end.

So now we are looking at more in the $600 dollar range, and I am not sure what his time is worth so you have to consider the headache of never doing this thing before. Which he is capable of doing, but is a learning process as he goes, and then what if it does not take. Repair guy at anywhere from 20 to 100 an hour.
Dell studio xps with all that he wants, $700
