I just upgrade a 450 MHz system to 870 MHz using the 870 Mototola gear. The system only used LE. The system now had 4-40 working perfectly and goes to 870 MHz without any problem. In this case you could used 4 output mini-bridger which could be an easy replacement for the trunk amp.
Thank GOD the previous designer used a 29 dB has the maximum multi tap value. The new Motorola LE has 34 dB operating gain and we required 33.88 dB gain to go from 450 to 870 Mhz. Because these LE used GaAs technology, we were able to get 46 dBmV output at 870 MHz. The LE are equipped with and AGC and a TLC at every amplifier. There is a lot of second hand 750 or 870 MHz of this type of amplifier around, which should keep your cost low.
Good luck.
