Great post much better then the Star Wars and Thoughts of a CATV Tech someone posted. I remember all those scenarios but for me it was 1960.
Scenario #1 my friend Mike Zimmerman built a shotgun in machine shop for his 12th grade project. When it was finished the teacher took the whole class out to the woods behind the school with two shell's the teacher shot it first then let Mike shoot it. We went back to class and the teacher removed the firing-pin gave Mike an A+ on his project and had his father come in to school to take the gun home.
Today Mike would have been expelled just for thinking about machining a gun or gun parts. Mike went on to work for several machine shops and now works for a defense contractor as a QC engineer has put 3 kids through collage all from what he was allowed to learn in high school.
