I've been doing this for three years now. This is absolutely the best piece of advice a contractor can receive. Actually, it's the best piece of advice any human can receive. Never, should you ever EVER sign something without reading it entirely. If you don't like the terms, then it's up to you to modify them right then and there. This goes for anything at any time: a doctor's visit, a speeding ticket, getting your satellite TV hooked up, opening a bank account, you name it.
If you don't have time to review the contract in private and re-print it, then just put a LINE through the items you don't like, write in the new terms in the margin, and initial it. Then, when you sign at the dotted line, just write 'modified' nearby your signature (to go the extra mile, so it's clear you're not attempting fraud). Chances are, the mindless drone who's receiving the paperwork won't care one iota. But if it ever comes to court, it will mean the world. And yes, get a copy for yourself, and when the receive and begin acting on the contract, it will provide FURTHER evidence (beyond the wet signature) that they have received and accepted the terms of the agreement.
If the receiving party DOES care about your modifications, GREAT! TALK ABOUT THEM. Negotiate and re-negotiate.
This method is beyond ethical. It strikes to the heart of morality. It's the ONLY way to be. If you're going to agree to something, PERFORM, or DON'T AGREE in the first place.
