Depends on the State you are in. When I lived in Delaware a few years back, I received a ticket for my license plate light being out. It was a misdemeanor. I do believe they may have changed their laws since then, but I'm not sure.

A side note to that is, I did challenge it in court (the ticket), and the prosecutor threw the ticket out. I guess I got lucky, otherwise apparently I'd be banned from working anywhere for the rest of my life!
