Yes you are correct that Johnson recalled our planes but his reasons were he rather have that ship on the bottom and lose our boys than embarrass an allied. Israel hit that spy ship which is what it was in international waters because they didn't want us to know that they were about to invade the Golan Heights. Why in the Hell did we need to join the 6 Day War. The title of war sums that up!
