Think of it this way, I was taught early on too think of your cable like you would a pipe. The shielding on drop cable and the hard aluminum on trunk and feeder cable is "the pipe" and the signal is the water. Broken braid, poor/loose connectors will let the signal leak out just like water would, and let other unwanted signals, noise etc. leak in.
Back when I was the leakage guy in our system I got handed a service call from a customer who was complaining about getting HBO or some such channel, caught his kid watching adult movies. Thing was the guy didn't have cable, just a good antenna and it was picking up a leak from the neighbors underground drop that had a really old splice in it.
Oh and by all means do the NCTI courses. They aren't the end all as hands on will teach you more but they do help alot. Hope that helps.
