How the System Works?

As an installer, I know very little about the system I work. Had an install yesterday where Maint. was already there. They said that one of the a/o's from the job I was about to do had SEVERE ingress and needed a filter... Of course that would be the one a/o that the Cust wanted PHONE, HSI and a DIGI Box on..(go figure right;) I replaced everything from the drop to the equipment. Called Maint and they said the node was all good..  I had no idea that an A/O could feed back noise so bad it affected a whole node...  hmmm is the system this fragile or is this business as usual for you Linemen?

Well this got me thinking that It would be helpful to know how a Cable system works from the Main Trunk to the customers house. Can someone provide a basic rundown or point me in a direction where I can learn this info. Like Cablesystems for Dummies..lol  Any info would be appreciated.. More specific is how do you keep the nodes balanced and does each node feed to a main hub or something? If the nodes aren't balanced does this throw the whole system off? Curiosity has got me very interested..Thanks in adance...

Mike
