As to where I would have attached it at the base, I would have bolted it right to one of the pipe mount flange bolts, no scraping necessary and no worry of rust beyond what would occur anyway. No ring connector, would have formed the 12 gauge around the mounting bolt for the best connection, just as is done when wiring an electrical outlet.
And I wouldn't have put it thru the loop.
