Your right. A ground block is not .....needed.
BUT!! .... It is a best practice to have a Ground Block 1st, then feeding your splitters for a few reasons.
#1 - Busy body home-owners who like to do thier own postwires will MOST TIMES only take out that 3-way or 4-way to put in a 6-way. If you have no ground block, do you actually think he's going to reground to the new splitter he just put in?
#2 - Do you actually think a satallite installer gives a shit about the cable's ground?? Tuck that drop and ground block with the ground attached wayback and out of the way, Satallite man prolly won't even look for it, he'll just take the homeruns off your 4-way to connect his up... meanwhile, your drop is still grounded properly.
#3 - Most ground blocks bonding surface is most times larger than that of a splitter, giving a better bond to ground.
Is putting in a ground block more work?? Yes..but not by much. It's much better to protect your work and the system by trying to reduce the risk ...and try to eliminate the possibility ... that happy home-owner or hack-sat. installer will expose your plant to damage.
Some systems say, "Yes, put one in." while others say "No, not manditory (but would be nice)".
Yes, no, maybe, sometimes, all the times ... regaurdless of your system: ALWAYS check your ground.
