Re: More Hack Crap

In a box the GB position is inconsequential. Putting the GB horizontally in that size box will case both the input and output cable to have too small of a radius. In this case the correct method is to install the GB vertically as is shown. When no box is used, yes, horizontal is the only correct position. The splitter should also be vertical in this case and is incorrectly installed as shown in the picture being at an angle.

The ground wire is incorrect. The correct way is to have it go directly from the GB straight down to the exit hole. There would be no curves, no tight, almost sharp bends as are there now. The excess should have been cut off. The ground tag should be placed on the outside of the box close to the entry/exit hole as possible. Some systems do require the splitter to also be grounded along with the GB. Some systems (as has been duly noted already) want the GB to be eliminated entirely. I have worked systems that use both methods. Personally I like the GB & the splitter to be used and both to be bonded together.

The box size is usually not up to the installer as very very few systems carry more than 1 size box. If the install is for 3,4 or more outlets, the installer is told to mount a second box next to the original box.

Absolutely always use the most gentle curved loop as is practical and always leave an actual loop of cable for future fitting replacement. The best way is to loop the perimeter of the box and then into the GB or splitter. Had you mounted the box correctly on the left side of the conduit that it was strapped to originally, instead of the farthest right side next to the phone box, you would have had enough cable to get your loops.

Regardless, it looks worlds better than it did when you got there, and you should be commended for at least cleaning it up. Just a minute or two longer though and you could have had a perfect install.

You should know better Island about posting pictures here of installs that aren't absolutely perfect.
