Greg,
Glad you were able to attend the meeting this year and found lots of great information. As a fellow SCTE member, I wish I could have gone this year but was (and still am) in the moving process from Las Vegas to Washington state. As for cable being "dead" ... The only "dead" I see from a technician stand-point is job availability.
Here in Washington, Comcast is not and has not been hiring field techs for God knows how long. I have been checking thier postings twice a week for over a month and once a month before that for about a year. There has been nothing. Even the contractors in NW Washington are not hiring. They're not even offering sub/sub-1099 as there is not enough work. Las Vegas was on a hiring freeze for over a year and just started up again this summer with two small hirings at around 13 peeps per class. I don't see Cox-LV hiring again until spring of 2010.
So yes ... in my eyes. Cable is dead right now. I suspect that if you are a tech right now ...keep the job you got as it's dry out here.
I moved because my wife is an emergency room RN. She makes more than all of us. So when she found a bigger better deal for her career that forced the move .. well, Skippy here gave up his gig and off to WA we go.
Satallite?? dead. No jobs there
The Telco's ?? Quest, Verizon, AT&T ... Dead. No one is hiring field techs.
Now ... If someone has a lead for NW Washington state.... I'm all ears
