jdsu has some good guides called something like "triple play tap to house" or something like that....this is really great if you happen to be using one of their meters...probably not as helpful if you have an older meter or no meter at all...
for trouble shooting...the old "find it good" advice is as good as any...but your trouble shooting is probably only as good as your meter when it comes to digital and docsis situations...an old cable tech can tell you exactly what the problem is by looking at an analog picture but are sometimes left behind if they dont get behind the newer digital measuring techniques and equipment...
overall, find someone who LOVES cable...and just hang out...a true "cable guy" wont be able to help himself...he will tell you everything he knows and answer every single question you have to the best of his ability...be careful though, there's a ton of bullshitters who dont care if they mislead you
good luck...and remember this: if it isnt hard, miserable and crappy the first three months, then you might not be doing the best job you can
