Unfortunately you work in a field where the guys will bitch about paying $15 a week union dues. But will accept things like beeing charged back $125 for a job that paid out $75. In fact, they will allow the same people charging them back 125% of a job to tell them that paying $15 a week union dues will put them in the poor house. When you're dealing with that kind of mentality, it's not likely things will change.
Theres alot of work in cable & DBS. There are many NECA (union employers) contractors that will pay techs $30/hr + bennies to perform CATV work. But because we support the low rate companies that offer these terrible wages they can never win bids.
Heres an example of what some companies would pay if they could win the bids. These companies rarely bid on CATV work because of the low ballers who bid, win, and stay in business by stiffing installers and skirting the law...
http://www.ibewlocal176.org/ibew_agreements_vdv.htm These are the wages NECA contractor have agreed to pay their workers. Remember, this is the same work you're doing and are getting paid less than half the wages. This is what collective bargaining can do.
