I always found it easier to start at one end and work toward the other. Because you never know what you will find in the customers home try starting at the head end. Make sure that its everything is at the proper level, you can get a good one for cheap at Home Depot. Then once the head end is level you will have to check the node to make sure you have light. This is best done at night because its easier to see the light. After you are sure you have light at the node you will need to make sure its balanced, once again your Home Depot level will come in handy here.
Then after the node you will have to check every amp and line extender on the run between the node and the customers house to make sure they are balanced. Then after the last LE on the run is balanced you will have to check the taps and splitters between it and the home for the proper amount of db's. If they are to high remove what is needed and save them to use when you need more db's. If you need more db's you will have to use what you have saved or ask your warehouse guy for some on your next stock day. Now that you have the proper amount of db's at the tap you can check the drop and once again add or remove db's as needed until you reach the STB or modem, and unless its the customers equipment your problem should be fixed. If you are still having trouble then call someone who knows what the hell he is doing and learn from him or get out of the industry. The only real way to learn is to put your time in and get experience.
