2 things. First there is no referendum mechanism for federal elections, so there is no way to put it on the ballot.
Secondly a 35% profit margin, I would start my own insurance company tomorrow for that margin. I believe the market solution is the way to go but there are systematic problems that do need to be addressed. Number 1 being tort reform.
We all wonder why drugs are so expensive for brand name drugs. Do you know the hoops a drug has to go through to get FDA approval. And then 5, 10 years later, after the gov't signed off themselves, a problem arises and the multi billion dollar lawsuits start ie vioxx. Where do you think the costs of those suits gets paid from. And drug companies spread the risk across all of their products.
And then there is the malpractice insurance costs. Every doctor, hospital, xray tech etc has to cover themselves for malpractice. Again those costs are passed on in the bill for services.
All of the legal costs add thousands to every case a hospital deals with. And they are paid on cases where there is no problem to cover cases that will have problems. I am not saying some doctors screw up and need to be punished, but it is out of hand. I remember one case in the vioxx trials that the guy was on it for a couple of weeks and wanted a few million dollars. The research showed long time exposure to the drug may cause problems. But even this required a lawyer and an enormous amout of money to litigate. We all get the bill for this stuff. Tort reform needs to be handled for anyone to have a chance of fixing this.
Illegals are another huge burden no one wants to deal with. If they walk in to the ER and are in serious trouble, you have to treat them. But have you seen an ER lately? I have my own big medical problems and go through the ER 3 to 5 times a year. And I see illegals with minor, family care doctor issues in the ER with no way or intention of paying. There has to be a reasonable cutoff to what an ER has to treat as opposed to sending them to a family doctor and paying the fee. I'll leave the discussion about calling ICE to another post.
