The sad part about our manufacturing sector is that it was not a one sided demise. Sure the corporations left to get at cheaper labor which helps keep down its costs, but the actions of the government did nothing to help either.
The convoluted tax structureon just the federal level is a disaster area and when you get to the states it is a complete mess. States offer tax breaks to some to move businesses into their area, cutting taxes to the original state and the new state does not generate the revenue it should of. And the federal government tax structure has so many antiquated taxes and loopholes in it, it is insane. If you take your company offshore, you avoid all of this mess, the cheaper labor is a bonus.
Also here you have this crazy logic of tax the rich, which includes business. When will people get it through their heads that businesses don't pay taxes, only people do. If you raise a tax on a business, the business, if it wants to remain open, passes that cost along in the form of a higher price to the consumer. Net result is that we taxed ourselves under the guise of taxing the rich. But that only applies to US based companies, if you are offshore, you don't have the extra cost and your item undercuts the US made item. And even though the pointy headed liberals will tell you it doesn't make a differnce, we all know when looking at two different comparable products, more than likely the cheaper one will be purchased.
It scares the hell out of me that if we had another WW II right now, we could not do what we did in manufacturing like we did then. That was what won that war, we out produced the Germans and Japenese at every trun. They may not have always been the most advanced, but we fielded so many of everything that we tidal waved them all. No knocks against the military personnel at all, but this is a true statement. Does anyone believe we could ramp up like that again?
The sentiment of buy American is understandable, even desireable, but in the end it will fail. Until we clean up our own mess at home American manufacturing will flounder. And the politicians are not going to fix anything without a swift kick in the ass.
