I was lucky enough to be trained by and old school cable guy when i started . Wouldn't let me climb a ladder at a pole unless he was there , and he took the time to show me about poles , spans , where to cut , when to cut , when to kick it and so on. But I have to agree , its careless and just plain stupid to cut a midspan without relieving the stress first . Holding the span and belting off only goes so far , but if you cut at the house , or take away the tension before you go up , there will be no problem. Unseen accidents do happen , tree limbs break , gravity is a bitch , but if you plan ahead , the chances of getting hurt can be small. The guy who trained me was a smart ass , and the one thing he never joked about was ladder / pole safety . Because of that every green guy i see I always make sure they know, I don't wait for someone else to do it , I make sure I do my part and tell them all , if they have heard it before , a reminder doesn't hurt.
