The same argument was made when automatic switching hardware eliminated cord boards and operators. Those jobs went away, and others were created. Simply put, new technology installation requires new knowledge. A tech 20 years ago carried wrenches and screwdrivers. Today, if he doesn't carry a laptop, he's limited in pay and capability. You have to grow with the times or be pigeon-holed as obsolete. Not much call for stepping switch techs these days, but VoIP techs command top money. Be yesterday and repair Studebakers or be today and diagnose fuel injection.
