I once worked for a contractor(Harris McBurney) how would pay part hourly, I think it was like $8 an hour for truck and tools, and piece rate. Example, you bill $1500.00,   $320.00 would be taxed, the remainder would be called a bonus and not taxed,   now the last contractor I was with, switched from 1099 to W-2, still billed piece rate, but had to pay taxes on it, plus he supplied comp and liability, so it was actually better, though seeing that tax money go hurt, but hell ya gotta pay it one way or another,
