scarlton is correct-the previous employer is only allowed to confirm length of employment and if eligible for re-hire.

As a Plant Manager I hire/fire-I like people w/experience but when I start asking them specifics like what kinda connectors, splitters, coax, and CPE they used or what an active or passive is or what brands they are familiar with, system voltage etc, etc they usually end up proving they were nothing more than a "spoon bill" which is why they are out of work in the first place. And yes-I would rather hire a guy w/o experience than the guy who has been doing it for a while and still knows nothing-take an interest in your career and educate yourself.

Bottom line-you dont wanna work for that guy now -move on.
