It's f'n amazing how ignorant we are as Americans about basic s**t like the IRS.
Here is the deal:
There is a procedure to dispute the numbers reported on a 1099 or a W-2. It's in the tax code.
This is pretty much the same way government works in all things voluntary. If you do not dispute it in the timely manner prescribed it becomes a legal fact.
Obviously you did not dispute it in 2007.
So now you have the burden to disprove a legal fact based upon the rules of evidence used by the so called taxing authorities.
At this point it is not up to the IRS to disprove it. It is up to you to prove the income amount reported on the 1099 was inaccurate.
The only thing going for you is the present political climate against the IRS.
I suggest if you do not have an attorney to immediately contact your congressman.
