I wont argue that point with you but you can only go out so far. I have only worked in Upstate NY... Nothing but rock, most driveways have 8 to 10 inches of Bank run gravel under them. We try and start out at 18 to 20 inches our Minimum cover, but when you get up against a rock it doesn't leave much room for error.
The Roto is more accurate than the mole but it still leaves a lot to be desired.
I have bored 40' roads and come out within inches of the same depth I started. I have also bored 12' driveways and come out several feet below the starting point.
