How does a sub learn new skills?

I know most will answer with partner with someone who is good at what you want to learn and watch what they do. What about the tech who does installations but now wants to learn sweep, splice (coax or fiber), cert or how to troubleshoot the network. You can't learn how to apply Ohms law to calculate voltage drops on a strand map or expected current draw and loop resistance to determine a short or overloaded power supply.

You can't learn to set up or sweep an node or amp by watching. You need to understand how the device functions and operates (inputs/outputs/AC/DC/interstage/system response/optimization/etc.). I am just curious how does one learn these skills and how long does it take or maybe you guys were born with them like me. (wink) (rotflmao)
