I use to live in Fl. I had a scorched earth policy when it cam to Fire Ants. Twice a month I went to the feed store and got a 10 lb bag of Otho poison. Put it in my hand crank spreader and treated the whole yard. After about 6 month I could cut back to once every 2 months. Never had a problem with them after that.
When I was a kid and use to run and play in the orange groves I learned about them on more than one occasion.
I have had more problems with wasps and hornets than anything else. Was up a pole on my hooks working on a amp that I guess was to close to a hornets nest got stung in the ear and on the back and head before I made it to the ground. My ear swelled up so big it looked like a head of cauliflower.
