Anyone know what would cause this??

Ok so I have a 2way drop splitter with an active drop on the input and my meter(SDA5000) plugged in one of the outputs to start with. When I insert any cable into the other port I lose between 3-5 db of signal. I tried changing out splitters and f-connectors, and checked for voltage. I also used different cables in the other port, one cable was feeding an 8way, one was feeding the modem, and the other was just a short jumper and they all had the same effect. This only occured at one residence that i was working at. I have attempted to replicate it a 2nd location but couldnt duplicate the results. Anyone have a clue on this one? My sup and one of the system techs were stumped.
