When I started in this business we used amp pic-a-bond conectors with a belt fed MA8 or MA10 splicing machine. It made a real neat splice. GTE got away from them and went straight to the scotch lock. I think back and the largest splice I ever made with scotch locks was a 1800. A six inch preform closure would be pretty tight, go with an eight or nine 1/2 and as long as you bank your groups 200 pair to each side and stager each hundred. Wrap your splice up in clear wrap and it won't be so ugly. I have never heard of copper splicing being priced by group, only by pair. The last copper I spliced was ten years ago and we only had two break downs, 1-200 pair was 50 cents and anything over was 40 cents per pair. Hopefully the price has come up in the past ten years. I agree though. 3M module is the only way to go. I never really cared for the 710 Bell module.
